Biotechnology Study Program
- Vision
The Biotechnology Study Program of the Graduate School, Gadjah Mada University, envisions becoming a pioneer in Master’s level education in Biotechnology in Indonesia with international standards, dedicated to the interests of the nation and humanity, guided by the cultural values of the nation based on Pancasila.
- Mission
The mission of the Master’s Program in Biotechnology at UGM includes:

- Conducting internationally recognized Master’s level education in the field of Biotechnology that enhances the career success of graduates and contributes to the improvement of the nation’s quality of life.
- Supporting the advancement of biotechnology research that contributes to education and the progress of science, technology, and cultural enrichment of the nation.
- Initiating and implementing collaborative programs, both nationally and internationally, with educational institutions, research organizations, government agencies, businesses, and communities.
- Goal
The objectives of this study program are:

- To produce postgraduate program graduates with competitive abilities, enabling them to pursue further postgraduate studies both domestically and internationally.
- To generate high-quality scientific publications in the fields of health, agriculture, environment, and industry biotechnology.
- To develop technologies in the fields of health, agriculture, environment, and industrial biotechnology.
- To establish collaborations in education and research with other educational institutions both domestically and internationally.
- To foster collaborations in research with research institutions and industries both domestically and internationally.
- Target
The envision targets of this program:

- To produce graduates of Master’s in Biotechnology who possess the ability to create by applying modern biotechnology principles, thereby capable of providing benefits for humanity.
- To produce graduates of Master’s in Biotechnology with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.00 and a study period of 2 years, enabling them to compete for further postgraduate studies both domestically and internationally.
- To produce 1 scientific work published at the national/international level in the fields of health, agriculture, environment, and industrial biotechnology by each respective educator every year.
- To develop new technologies in the fields of health, agriculture, environment, and industrial biotechnology.
- To enhance collaboration in education and research with the International Center for Biotechnology Osaka University, Ibaraki University Japan, and Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) Japan.
- To strengthen collaboration in research with institutions and industries engaged in biotechnology.
- Curriculum
The 2018 curriculum for the Master’s in Biotechnology program consists of 40 – 50 Credit Hours (CH), divided as follows: The program’s activities are structured in a curriculum that can be completed in less than 4 semesters, with the following breakdown: (a) Semester I: 10 CH of mandatory program courses and 6 – 10 CH of elective courses, (b) Semester II: 9 CH of mandatory courses and 6 – 11 CH of mandatory interest-specific and/or elective courses, (c) Semester III: 8 CH for the thesis.
Mandatory Courses
These courses provide support for the deepening of knowledge and expertise in biotechnology and are offered at an advanced level. The total number of credit hours for mandatory courses is 19 or 17.5 Credit, which includes: Cell Biology (2/0), Molecular Physiology (2/0), Molecular Genetics (2/0), Bioinformatics for Genomic and Protein Analysis (2/0), Good Research Practice (2/0), Genetic Engineering (2/0), Cell Propagation (2/0), Molecular Detection (0/2), Career in Biotechnology (1/0), Proposal Development (2/0).
