Audience Visit Regarding DNA-Based Halal Authentication Tools by the National Committee for Sharia Economic and Financial Affairs (KNEKS

Friday, March 18, 2022, The Research Center for Biotechnology Universitas Gadjah Mada welcomed an audience visit from the National Committee for Sharia Economic and Financial Affairs (KNEKS). The visit revolved around discussions regarding the collaboration for creating a DNA-based Halal Authentication Tool, which would involve the utilization of the laboratories at The Research Center for Biotechnology Universitas Gadjah Mada.

The discussion was conducted with enthusiasm, leading to further planning regarding the collaboration offer. It is expected that following the visit on Friday (3/18), there will be ongoing communication between The Research Center for Biotechnology Universitas Gadjah Mada and the National Committee for Sharia Economic and Financial Affairs (KNEKS).

Because of the ongoing pandemic situation in Yogyakarta, The Research Center for Biotechnology Universitas Gadjah Mada made every effort to adhere to health protocols as recommended by the government while welcoming this visit and also to promote the third SDG.

 

Coordination Meeting of The Research Center for Biotechnology UGM

Monday, January 31, 2022, The Research Center for Biotechnology Universitas Gadjah Mada held a Coordination Meeting, which is a regular monthly agenda. This coordination was conducted with the aim of fostering effective communication between the head of the research center and the staff members and ensuring the smooth operation of activities within The Research Center for Biotechnology Universitas Gadjah Mada.

The coordination was carried out while adhering to the prevailing health protocols, including wearing masks, maintaining physical distance, and ensuring clean hands by providing hand sanitizers. This activity is in line with the 3rd SDG on health.

Press Release: The 7th National Biotechnology Seminar

The Biotechnology Master’s and Doctoral Programs, along with The Research Center for Biotechnology Universitas Gadjah Mada, successfully organized the 7th National Biotechnology Seminar on October 23, 2021. This Seminar revolved around the theme “Biotechnology for Climate Change and Global Warming Mitigation” and featured four keynote speakers, including: Prof. Willfriend Schwab from Technische Universitait Munchen, Prof. Michael Sauer from Universitait fur Bodenkultur Wien, Prof. Siti Subandiyah from Universitas Gadjah Mada, and Prof. Chi-Ying F. Huang from National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University.

The seminar, attended by 126 participants, was inaugurated by Dr. ret.nat. Lucia D. Witasari, S.Farm., Apt., M.Biotech., the Chair of the 7th National Biotechnology Seminar Committee. Additionally, there were 47 presenters who shared their research findings, and from this group, one outstanding presenter was selected. The aim of organizing this National Seminar is to foster opportunities for future research collaborations in the field of biotechnology. This activity is in accordance with the 13th SDGs, namely participating in taking action on climate change. And included in SDG 4, namely promoting and spreading the importance of awareness of climate change.

International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) team of Universitas Gadjah Mada presents a breakthrough in gold bioleaching process with cyanide. By applying synthetic biology, iGEM UGM engineered Chromobacterium violaceum to self-regulate cyanide production. Thus, minimizes cyanide leaked into environment.
The iGEM UGM team consists of students and lecturers from various faculty across Universitas Gadjah Mada – biology, mathematic and science, agriculture, engineering, and economy & business. The Research Center for Biotechnology Universitas Gadjah Mada developed and facilitated this multi-disciplinary team to run the synthetic biology project.This activity is in line with SDG 4, which is to improve the quality of education.
