News Release
The iGEM UGM 2023 team, in collaboration with The Research Center for Biotechnology Universitas Gadjah mada, organized the iGEM 2023 Workshop on August 5-6 and 12-13, 2023, intended as training for high school students who will participate in the National Science Olympiad (OSN) 2023 scheduled for August 27.
The Workshop was divided into two parts: an in-person session on August 5-6 and an online session on August 12-13. The in-person activities included practical learning sessions as follows:
- Biochemistry with a training topic on micropipette usage and protein concentration measurement using the Bradford reagent, presented by I Made Rhamandana Putra (Pharmacy 2019).
- Molecular Biology with a topic on PCR and electrophoresis, presented by Melodia Rezadhini (Microbiology 2019).
- Animal Anatomy and Physiology with topics covering vertebrate histology and anatomy of organisms such as crickets, earthworms, and fish, presented by Farrel Alfaza Marsetyo (Medicine 2021).
- Plant Anatomy and Physiology with a focus on leaf and stem anatomy, also presented by Farrel Alfaza Marsetyo (Medicine 2021).
On Wednesday, November 9, 2022, the Lecture Series on Biotechnology with the theme “One Health Perspective in Human Life” took place in the Lecture Room on the 3rd floor of the Research Center for Biotechnology Universitas Gadjah Mada. The event featured guest speakers including:
- Dr. Aneta Afelt from the University of Warsaw, Poland Topic: Globalization and Impact on Epidemiological Risk in the Anthropocene – One Health Concept
- IRD – Institut de Recherche pour le Développement Montpellier, France Topic: [Topic title not provided in the text]
- Prof. Dr. drh. Wayan Tunas Artama from Gadjah Mada University Topic: Anti-microbial Resistance Challenge from a One Health Perspective
The event commenced with an opening address from Dr. Dini Wahyu Kartika Sari, S.Pi., M.Si., who is the Head of the Master’s Program in Biotechnology. This was followed by a speech by Dr. Yekti Asih Purwestri, S.Si., M.Si. The career lecture event was attended by students from the Biotechnology Master’s Program at UGM. This career lecture is in line with the 3rd and 4th SDGs.
The Workshop on Developing Proteomic Analysis Competence for the Development of Peptide-Based Anti-Cancer and Anti-Bacterial Agents took place at The Research Center for Biotechnology Universitas Gadjah Mada, from October 31 to November 2, 2022. The event featured several speakers, including:
- Prof. Manjunatha Kini (Department of Biological Sciences, National University of Singapore)
- Respati Tri Swasono, S.Si., M.Phil., Ph.D. (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UGM)
- Tri Joko Raharjo, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D. (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UGM)
- Muhammad Saifur Rohman, S.P., M.Si., M.Eng., Ph.D. (Faculty of Agriculture, UGM)
- Eka Sunarwidhi Prasedya, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D. (Universitas Negeri Mataram)
The background for organizing this workshop lies in the persistent global health issue of cancer, which remains a leading cause of high mortality rates and ranks as the second most common cause of death worldwide. Conventional cancer treatment methods, including chemotherapy and surgery, have not yielded optimal results due to the significant side effects that impact the quality of life for patients. These side effects are often associated with the lack of specificity in chemotherapy drugs, which also damage normal cells.
The 8th National Biotechnology Seminar is an annual event organized by the Master’s Program in Biotechnology in collaboration with The Research Center for Biotechnology Universitas Gadjah Mada. This seminar takes place each year and is divided into four areas: agriculture, health, industry, and environment. In 2022, the 8th Biotechnology Seminar was able to be held in person due to the subsiding COVID-19 pandemic, with strict adherence to health protocols.
The theme of the 8th National Biotechnology Seminar was “Biotechnology for Climate Change and Global Warming Mitigation.” This theme was chosen in response to the wide-ranging implications of climate change on food security, health, safety, and the need for adaptation to a changing climate. Various strategies, utilizing biotechnological approaches, can be applied to address climate change. Thus, in line with the implementation of the 13th SDG.
